Frente Zapastista Speaks on Mex Elections

México City, July 6, 2000: From Proceso: "The PRI has gone to hell and this should make us very happy," affirmed the leader of the Frente Zapastista for National Liberation Javier Elorriaga Berdegué, who called to continue fighting "to completely dismantle the system of the State that remained for 70 years."

In a radio interview, he said that the next task will be to prevent the PAN party from doing the same thing, "because I see them as very, very, similar to the PRI."

And, in the opinion of Elorriaga, the people didn't vote for Vicente Fox, the president-elect, nor for the National Action Party (PAN), but rather against the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

He said that he hopes that Fox complies with his promises to solve the Chiapas conflict and demilitarize the the State, but sustained that in this state nothing has changed.

"Only on election day did the soldiers dress as civilians, but on Monday they were already the same as before: the patrols, the roadblocks, the violations of human rights were the same," he said. July 6, 2000. Copyright Comunicación y Información SA de CV.
